The Australia Zoo which was originally named “The Beerwah Reptile and Fauna Park” when Lyn and Bob Irwin first opened it in 1970 with their 3 kids Joy, Steve and Mandy. In 1980 they renamed it “Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park”. In 1991 Steve Irwin, Lyd’s and Bob’s only son, started running the park until 1992 when he got married to Terri and they started to run it together. In 1998 Steve Irwin for the last time renamed the park “Australia Zoo” which has still been its name. In 2006, the year of Steve’s death, Terri took over the zoo with their two kids, Bindi and Robert.
Zoo Programs
“Adopt an Animal”
You can sign up to adopt an animal you just choose the amount of donation you want to give towards that animal, $50 - $1,500. There are a lot of animals to choose from, many different species from Tigers all the way to Lizards.
“Animal Encounters”
Here you can choose to ride a camel, pet and feed the zebras, play with the tiger cubs, meet the Ripper Rhino, take a walk with their Tiger and many different activities with different animals. Of course each activity would cost you money any ware from $20 to $500.
“Zoo Keeper of the Day”
In this program they have different things that you can do. The “Khaki Discovery Program” which is where you actually get to see what you would have to do if you were really the Zoo keeper for ages 7-11. Then there’s the “Khaki Extreme Program” which give you a backstage look into the zoo, but only for ages 12- 15. The “Khaki Extreme Reptiles” which is a place where you look at all the reptile animals, but only for ages 12-15. Lastly there’s the “Khaki Sensory Program” which is a program for the special needs kids, ages 7-15.

Here they have different programs to try to make kids more involve in nature and for them to know more about animals. They have challenges for schools, facts of the day, education center, and wild
education.
